GEAR stands for "Gallery for Evolutionary Computation and Artificial Intelligence Research".

He received his BA degree in 1976, M.A. degree in 1978, both from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and had the Doctor of Engineering Degree in 1991 from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.
During 1978 and 1989, he was research scientist at the Central Research
Institute of the Electric Power Industry. During 1990 and 2003, he was
a professor of University of Tsukuba. During 2003 ans 2018, he wa a professor
of Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research interests include Genetic
Algorithm-based machine learning, Case-based reasoning, Analogical reasoning,
Distributed Artificial Intelligence, Cooperative Agents, Computational
Organization Theory., and Knowledge System Development Methodology.
He is a member of the editorial board of major AI-related academic societies in Japan and a member of IEEE, AAAI, ACM, and PAAA (president).
